Warm up for Little Creatures family festival
As ZSL Whipsnade Zoo warms up for its Little Creatures family festival, one of its very own little creatures is preparing to do exactly the same.
Nine-month-old greater one-horned rhino, Jamil, is set to enjoy his very first kickabout with brightly coloured boomer balls in the paddock he shares with mum, Behan.
Just like the little ones who’ll be enjoying the Zoo’s family festival at the weekend, Jamil needs constant entertaining too - so his ball will be filled with his favourite treats which he’ll have to kick around to work out how to reach the food inside.
Zookeeper Veronica Watkins said: “Like all youngsters Jamil is exceptionally inquisitive, so we constantly look for different ways to keep him and the rest of the herd fit and active.
“Young rhinos especially enjoy things they can rub on and push around, so we’re expecting his brightly coloured balls to be very popular.”
Jamil was born in December weighing a not-so-little nine stone (59kg), despite being less than three feet tall. When he’s fully grown he’ll weigh a whopping 315 stone (2000 kg) and stand at around six feet tall.
As well as seeing the Zoo’s very own little creatures, visitors to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s Little Creatures family festival (from August 16 to 18) can enjoy interactive storytelling, outdoor theatre and arts and crafts, as they explore Whipsnade’s wonderful world of animals with more than 200 species to see.
